Our nurses here at GROW get a lot of questions about breastfeeding, especially about the effect of medication (prescription or over-the-counter) on the safety and supply of their breastmilk. We consult a book by Thomas Hale, RPh PhD, the Executive Director of the Infant Risk Center at Texas Tech University.

We’ve just learned of a terrific resource for our families based on Dr. Hale’s research: MommyMeds.com, “a convenient way to access research-based information about medications and safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding.” This is a reliable resource we are excited to find and share with our families!

We also routinely recommend LactMed, from the NIH’s National Library of Medicine.

Lastly, KellyMom has a great article with a list of reliable resources for medication safety during breastfeeding: “How do I determine if a medication is safe for a breastfeeding mom?

If you prefer to have information on the go, there are two apps for your smartphone we recommend: MommyMeds and LactMed (both are compatible with iOS and Android devices).
