Well Child Checks

GROW Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine values the importance of regular preventive care for children of all ages. Our practice follows the American Academy of Pediatrics Bright Futures preventive care schedule, which includes at least 10 well checks in the first two years, followed by yearly visits:

  • 18 months
  • 24 months
  • 30 months
  • 3 years
  • 4 years
  • 5 years
  • 6 years
  • 7 years
  • 8 years
  • 9 years
  • 10 years
  • 11 years
  • 12 years
  • 13 years
  • 14 years
  • 15 years
  • 16 years
  • 17 years
  • 18 years

Many folks associate well checks with vaccines, but they are important for many other reasons! During these routine visits, we discuss the following:

  • Growth
  • Development (many developmental delays are identified at routine visits, and early intervention is key for best outcomes!)
  • Vision and hearing screens
  • Other risk screenings for tuberculosis, anemia, lead exposure, cholesterol
  • Behavioral and mental health
  • School and learning concerns
  • Physical exams
  • Puberty and body changes
  • Reinforce healthy habits around nutrition, sleep, exercise, behavior, screens, etc.
  • Safety topics including helmets, swimming, sun, firearms, babyproofing, etc.
  • Immunizations

You and your child also have the opportunity to ask questions and have important discussions with your physician.

For adolescent patients, we can counsel on age-appropriate topics like driving, relationships, mental health, substance use, and other safety issues. We like to speak to teens by themselves for a few minutes to encourage them to build independence and manage their own health, so feel free to prepare them for this!

Health insurance plans generally cover these visits completely, although we encourage all families to become familiar with their particular coverage. We always recommend  that patients schedule their next well check in advance, and we’re happy to assist in that at check-out.

Parents and families can find more information on the AAP’s family resource website, Healthy Children.org.
